Baby Bird

Take flight with this calming Mello meditation as you imagine yourself as a little bird on the edge of the nest. Together, we’ll practice greeting our fears with kindness and turning them into space for courage, love, and new beginnings.

  • In this gentle meditation, we imagine ourselves as a baby bird preparing for its very first flight. From the safety of the nest to the wide unknown of the sky, we explore how fear and excitement can live together, and how each breath helps us open to new possibilities. Along the way, we learn that even wobbly first steps—or flaps—carry us toward strength, freedom, and wonder.

Today we’re going to imagine something brave: the very first flight of a little bird.

Let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle.

That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a comfortable spot. Take a deep breath in, feeling your body fill with calm.… breathe out, as you exhale whisper to yourself, ‘I am safe.’ Inhale again… and feel love fill your body. Whisper, ‘I am loved.’

With one more deep breath, your imagination is ready. So let’s begin our adventure…

Now that you have found a comfortable place to sit, let your body grow tall like a tree.
Feel how strong your body can be, like a trunk rooted deep in the earth. Take your arms above you and stretch branches reaching into the sky.

Take a deep breath in, feeling the gentle sway of your branches as a breeze rustles your leaves…and with an open mouth, let it out, extending your fingers a little further.

    Again breathing in… and out.

Imagine that within your branches rests a nest. This little nest is made of tiny twigs, sticks, bits of leaves and plant material. I want you to imagine YOU are a tiny baby bird, nestled within the safety of your nest.

Tentatively you peer over the edge. The world below looks so big, so wide. The nest you are snuggled in is what you have always known. A little breeze flutters your feathers, the air feels strange and open. You feel a calling. You are no longer a hatchling but a fledgling now. You have practiced flapping your wings for weeks, they have gotten so strong.  Again you feel a calling

Remember baby birds like yourself don’t leap and soar right away. Their first flights in fact are often clumsy, gliding through short bursts of air with wobbly landings, feathers trembling with equal parts excitement and fear. But with each try, their wings grow stronger and their flight smoother.

The shape of a bird's wings lets the air move faster over the top than beneath, creating lift. The air’s invisible hands holding them up.

Breathe in as you perch on the edge of the nest and whisper: “Hello fear. I see you, I feel you.” As you breathe out let the air carry some of that fear away.

Again breathing in, “Hello fear.” And breathing out, softly letting go.

Fear arrives as a natural part of being alive. Even for baby birds. The unknown can feel scary… but it also holds possibility if we allow it to.

With every breath, imagine the space around you growing wider. Your wings open up. You may tremble, but the trembling is life itself moving through you. When we breathe with our fear, we can turn it into space for new possibilities.

Breathe in… and with an open mouth, let it out. In… and… out. With each exhale, feel your wings spread even further.

Life brings both suffering and beauty. Our breath helps us hold them both. The little bird may feel fear of the wind,  but this is the same wind will could carry it to beautiful places.

Puff up your chest little bird, allow yourself to not ruled by fear, but open to what comes next.

Take one more full breath, like wings catching air. Exhale with softness, like settling into trust.

Saying hello to our fear lets us know it does not control us. Our hearts are wide enough to hold both fear and love at the same time.

Carry this thought with you as you dream up your next flight little bird!
