What is a black hole? Are they real?

This cosmic meditation explores how black holes form—and how our minds sometimes feel like they’re spiraling into one. With curiosity, calm, and compassion, we guide listeners back to stillness, one breath at a time.

  • Whether your mind feels peaceful or tangled like a meteor shower, this meditation is for you.

Inspired by a listener's curious question—“What is a black hole? Are they real?”—we gaze into the galaxy and gently explore how our thoughts can feel like black holes too: intense, consuming, and impossible to escape. But just like the stars, you are never truly lost. Through deep breaths, calming imagery, and gentle grounding, we’ll help you return from runaway thoughts and remember you are never alone in the cosmos.

Stop Going Down Holes in Your Mind

Hey, you. Welcome to Mello. I’m so glad you’re here. Whether your day has been wonderful or a little tough, we’re here to sit with our feelings and be in this moment together.

This episode, our question comes from XXX:

XXX:  “What is a black hole? Are they real?”

What a good question! Did you know that there’s a black hole in the center of the milky way that’s so massive, it causes stars to orbit it? Wild, I know.

Let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle.

That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a comfortable spot. Take a deep breath in, feeling your body fill with calm.… breathe out, as you exhale whisper to yourself, ‘I am safe.’ Inhale again… and feel love fill your body. Whisper, ‘I am loved.’

With one more deep breath, your imagination is ready. So let’s begin our adventure…

    So sit back, relax…and mello.

You are outside, it’s a crisp summer night. You’re lying on the softest blanket, on the softest patch of grass, with the inky starlit sky stretched out in front of you.

The night is cool and impossibly quiet except for the sweet serenade of crickets.

Above you, the galaxy is alive. Endless stars blink down at you, planets glow faintly, and the Milky Way weaves its way across the darkness.

    (Quiet moment with music)

As you gaze up in awe, a thought shoots through your mind like a falling star. Perhaps it’s a “what if” about tomorrow. Or a memory of something that happened today that didn't feel quite right. Maybe it's something you wish you had said or something you wish you hadn't. Now your mind is like a meteor shower of runaway thoughts.

It’s as if you are getting pulled into the dark sky, further and further from Earth and your soft blanket. Then you see it; a black hole. The pull towards it is intense–just like the endless thoughts swirling in your mind.

Black holes are one of the strangest things in space.

Imagine a star. Not just any star, but a massive star, way bigger than our sun. It’s been shining for billions and billions of years, burning hydrogen as its fuel. Burning this fuel helps the star stay strong and round, holding back the gravity that constantly tries to push it down.

But when the fuel runs out, it gets really, really tired and…

(Sound effect of black hole forming)

Can’t hold the gravity back. It caves inside itself, getting smaller and smaller, pushed into a teeny tiny invisible dot.

Scientists have discovered that near a black hole, time stretches out and slows down. Light itself bends and pulls, like it's trying to climb out of the black hole’s grip. Many of the rules we know about space and science change when we are talking about black holes.

Sometimes our minds feel like a black hole has opened up inside them. That one little thought turns into another and another. Before we even realize what was happening, time has esssssscaped us. The thoughts have multiplied and we’re sucked into this black hole of our own making.

Take a deep breath in with me. Let's try to figure out exactly what these runaway thoughts are before you cross over the event horizon–before you’ve gone too far.

Breath in…. and out…. don’t try to change the thoughts, there’s no need to rush them away. Just notice how they feel. Do they make your chest feel tight? Do they buzz in your stomach or make your forehead wrinkle?

Let’s start with worries. Worried thoughts often race ahead, imagining things that might never happen. When we hold onto them too tightly, they can crowd out the calm in our hearts. With your next exhale, imagine those worries gently floating away. Like wisps of clouds drifting across the sky.

    Take a breath in…and a slow breath out…

    In and out

    In and out

Now, let's notice any self-doubts. These thoughts whisper that maybe you aren't enough.
But that's not the truth. You are growing. You are learning. You are exactly where you need to be. With your next exhale, let self-doubt loosen and lift away.

    Take a deep, warm breath in…and out…

    In and out

Finally, let’s find any “what-if” spirals in our minds. These are the thoughts that spin and spin, pulling you into imaginary moments. With your next breath, imagine pressing a gentle pause button. Watch the spirals slow…and slow…until they fade into quiet stars.

Here’s a secret I need you to know. Your mind is not a black hole. And even when your thoughts feel like they’re spinning out of control, you can come back. Even when your day feels too heavy to carry on.

Feel your chest rise and fall with your breath…in…and out…

Take note of your body, and how it feels inside.

Take another breath in. Let it out with a soft sigh. Feel your feet, your hands, your chest rising and falling. You are sorting out your mind. You are letting go of what you don’t need. You are giving yourself grace and love.

Yes, thoughts live in our minds, but they can also live in our bodies. Sometimes, the best way to calm a spiral is to move. Take a walk. Stretch your arms. Run through grass.
Sit beside a tree. Let your body remember the world is big and beautiful and not just made of thoughts.

If your thoughts feel tangled, try giving them a place to exist. You can draw them, scribble them or write them down.  Sometimes your thoughts just want to be seen. And once they are, they don’t need to shout so loud anymore.

But sometimes you need more help, and that's ok. You are not meant to carry every thought alone. The people who love you, the ones you trust, will sit with you and your mind, no matter how messy it feels. You are never alone.

Yes, black holes are still out there. But you’re not in one anymore. You’re floating free. Drifting peacefully back towards your cozy blanket. The soft grass. The quiet night.

You don’t have to solve everything tonight. You don’t have to be strong every second.

Just be here, breathing, resting, knowing you are loved — exactly as you are.

So rest easy, little star-traveler. The galaxy is wide, and your mind is calm.
You are safe. You are home.
