Pickles

Ever wondered what pickles can teach us about patience? This calming (and slightly silly) meditation invites kids to imagine the slow, beautiful transformation from cucumber to pickle—one mindful breath at a time.

  • In this delightfully briny adventure, we learn from one of the silliest—and wisest—foods around: the pickle! Together, we imagine what it’s like to be a cucumber transforming slowly, patiently, and perfectly into something full of flavor. Through gentle breathing, imagination, and a dash of humor, this episode reminds us that becoming takes time—and that we’re all soaking up a little magic along the way.

A little wrinkly or tired? Maybe somewhere in between? Take a deep breath and just notice how you feel exactly as you are. Today’s curious question is: How are pickles made? Mmmmmm this is going to be fun! First, let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle. That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a snuggle. Take a deep breath in, feeling your body fill with calm.… breathe out, as you exhale whisper to yourself, ‘I am safe.’ Inhale again… and feel love fill your body. Whisper, ‘I am loved.’ With one more deep breath, your imagination is ready. So let’s begin our adventure… It might sound silly but pickles have so much to teach us about patience, transformation, and flavor. So let’s take a deep breath together… and step into the briny, beautiful world of becoming. Imagine you’re a cucumber. Bright green, firm, full of potential. You’ve just been plucked from the garden, still carrying the warmth of the sun. You don’t yet know what kind of pickle you’ll become just yet. Perhaps sweet, spicy, sour, garlicky, or something no one’s tasted before. Take a breath in, feeling the freshness of beginnings. And exhale, letting go of needing to know the ending. Welcome to the brine of patience. To become a pickle, you have to wait. You must sit in stillness surrounded by salt, vinegar, herbs, and time. Each moment you soak, you’re changing quietly, slowly, perfectly. Take a deep breath in, and imagine patience bubbling inside you like tiny fermentation bubbles rising through a jar. Exhale slowly, whispering to yourself: “I can take my time.” Breathe in….crisp, cool, like the scent of dill And out…exhaling and releasing and tension Breath in and out…. Pickles come in every shape and size. Long and thin, short and bumpy, sliced, speared, or whole. Some are crisp and loud when you bite in. Others are soft and subtle. And that’s the beauty, there’s no one way to be a pickle. Take a breath in…and notice the air filling every corner of your body. The big, the small, the quiet, the loud. Exhale, releasing any thought that you must look or feel a certain way. Let your breath remind you: variety is what makes the world delicious. Picture jars lining the shelves of a sunlit kitchen, some new, some old, each filled with a different recipe, each passed down from generation to generation. You can almost hear the exuberant pop of a lid opening, the briny perfume of time and love that fills each jar. The magic of pickling isn’t just in what’s added it’s in the waiting, the transforming, the becoming. As you breathe in, say silently: “I am soaking in patience.” As you exhale, say: “I am becoming something full of flavor.” Let each breath brine you in calm. Let each moment season you with kindness, courage, and curiosity. Because you, my friend, are a marvelous pickle. One-of-a-kind, bursting with your own bright taste of life. So, as you go about your day, carry this reminder: you are meant to marinate, not rush. You are meant to soak in joy, curiosity, and time. Take one final deep breath in… and as you exhale, smile to yourself crisp, cool, and perfectly you.
