Settle Down
Hey, you. I am so glad you are here! Tonight we are going for a walk. A quiet one, a moonlit one. With the hope of seeing something magical.
Felicity has asked us a curious question.
Felicity: “What is a Firefly?”
Before we begin let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle.
That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a snuggle. Take a deep breath in, feeling your body fill with calm.… breathe out, as you exhale whisper to yourself, ‘I am safe.’ Inhale again… and feel love fill your body. Whisper, ‘I am loved.’
With one more deep breath, your imagination is ready. So let’s begin our adventure…
You are walking barefoot through the forest on a well worn path. The path is soft with pine needles and fallen leaves beneath your feet.
(hushed leaf crushing)
The trees stretch tall above you, only giving a glimpse of the night sky between their leaves. The trunks of the trees are silver in the moonlight, which illuminates the path ahead.
The evening summer air is warm, and smells sweet from the day's heat.
You walk quietly, listening to the night sounds that sing around you.
(pause with music and night sounds)
Ahead you begin to see that the once narrow path is opening. In the distance tiny specks of light catch your eye. Flickers in the dark.
The branches slowly open to a meadow. A meadow so vast you can't see its edges. Just tall grass swaying in the light breeze, and as you look up, the night sky fully opens to you.
Then you see the light again. Another flicker. And another. Tiny golden sparks blinking in the night. All around you these lights dance, glow, rise and fall.
Fireflies.
How lucky are you that you get to bear witness to their beauty. Fireflies create their incredible glow through bioluminesces, a light made in their bellies that blinks on and off. On and off.
They use this light to talk to each other. To find love, to sing and dance in the twilight together.
(pause with music here, maybe some twinkling?)
Can I tell you something? The bright lights of cities, pesticides, and vanishing forests
are causing creatures like this to disappear.
Which makes this whisper of time, this exact moment; you standing here beneath the stars surrounded by their twinkling words…rare…beautifully rare.
(pause with music and night sounds)
So take it in. Breath in and out, letting your heart fill deeply with each breath you take.
Watch them float like stars that forgot to stay in the sky. Stars that came down just to greet you. Feel a joy bloom inside of you, having discovered something wild and beautiful just beyond the edge of the forest path.
(pause with music and night sounds)
You are part of this moment too.
You also are part of this enchanting world.
You are safe. You are loved.
You are made of light that shines bright into the world.
Let this feeling carry you to sleep. Behind your closed eyes feel the fireflies softly blinking quietly into the night.
Goodnight little light, goodnight fireflies.
