How is a Water Bottle Made
Interconnectedness
Well hello! Thanks for dropping by. This is Mello, where we explore how everything in the world is connected—through nature, stories, emotions, and even the silliest moments.
When we sit with our feelings, we become more aware of the world around us. We start to see the invisible threads that connect us all, deepening our appreciation for the web of life that holds us together.
This episode, our question comes from Izzy:
Izzy: “How is a glass water bottle made?”
Oh my, I am so curious to learn more about this with you! Did you know that glassblowers recycle their "mistakes". The leftover or broken glass from a project can be melted down and reused in future creations. Isn’t that really cool!
Let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle.
That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a snuggle.
As you tuck into your cozy blanket, take a deep breath in, feeling your body fill with calm. As you exhale, whisper to yourself, “I am safe”. With your next inhale, feel your body fill with love. You exhale and whisper to yourself, “I am loved.”
With your last deep breath, your imagination is now ready for our nighttime adventure. So sit back, relax…and mello.
Close your eyes my little friend and take a deep breath. Feel the weight of your blankets all around you. Take one final sip of your water and feel it trickle down your throat and hydrate your body. Feel the water wash over your whole body, in each passing moment you sink deeper and deeper into a feeling of safety and relaxation.
breathe in and out
Far away in the distance, you begin to hear a gentle stream, its soothing sound echoing in the background of your mind, it fills your body with a feeling of peace and comfort. Allow that feeling to wash over you.
20 seconds of stream sounds + music.
As you listen to the soft whispers of the stream cascading by you, you begin to wonder how water makes its journey from streams like this onto the shelves at your local grocery store.
Think of the many steps and people that bring clean refreshing water to the lips of those seeking to quench their thirst. From collecting the sand on a distant beach, to melting and forming the glass container in which the water can be held to finally drinking in that water filling our bodies. The interconnectedness of all those singular moments bring a feeling of appreciation for the beings and nature that brought us here, together.
With this feeling of connection in your body, we take a deep breath in, feeling ourselves stretching out to the world around us. As we exhale, let's begin to imagine just how connected we are to even simple things like a water bottle.
Brief musical interlude.
Imagine a small glass pellet in your hand for a moment. It is smooth, tiny and imperfectly round. Bring your hands forward to form a cup with your palms. Glass pellets begin sprinkling from above, filling your hands by the second.
Gentle tinkling from above.
With each new pellet that falls into your hands, you think of the many beautiful moments throughout your day. Each memory fills your heart as you focus on the gentle sound of the glass falling. It is so soft, it barely reaches your ears.
Insert small pellets falling.
You find yourself leaning into this sweet sound, let it fill your mind with ease.
Pause.
You slowly begin to open your hands, letting the pellets fall through your fingertips, as you release any worries from your day that you’ve been holding onto.
(hear them tinkle onto the ground)
All the worries that filled your mind just moments ago, are simply gone.
You watch as this sparkling glass unites in shimmering streams all around you. (They move)
As you take a deep breath in, these small rivers begin to glow, melting down, becoming fluid and malleable. The tiny glass pellets are now a beautiful stream of liquid glass, warming you with its presence.
With a long hollow tube called a blow iron, you begin to gather the molten glass.
Feel the weight of this tube strengthen and warm your arms. With a deep slow even breath you gently exhale into the tube, watching the glass begin to form a bubble at its end.
(blowing sound)
As the bubble grows through your steady exhale, take note of your lungs emptying. And prepare yourself for your next deep inhale.
With your next exhale you begin to slowly spin the blow iron, seeing the shape of the water bottle begin to take form. With the ease of an expert glass blower, you use the blow iron and other tools to shape and form the vessel that will soon hold the water that will cool and hydrate your body.
You feel a sense of purpose and intention as you fill the mold, knowing that you are shaping something that will bring hydration and nourishment to yourself and others.
As you take in another deep breath, imagine your breath as a gentle breeze blowing over the mold, cooling and solidifying the glass, locking in its form and strength. (Sounds of glass hardening?) It begins to look much like the water bottles you have used time and time again without much thought.
A feeling of gratitude then rolls over you, having witnessed the bottle being released from the mold, ( sound of glass pulling from a mold..suction?) ready to fulfill its purpose in the world.
You reach out feeling a cool spigot, turning it on and filling the bottle with water flowing up to the tippity top.
Take this moment to appreciate the beauty of this simple yet complex creation and the interconnectedness of all things. It took many people to create the cool glass bottle that is leaving its condensation on your hands. Even these tiny droplets of water leaving your hand slightly damp, would not exist without the person who first collected the sand. The sand alone was just mere grains, some too small to even be seen.
As your breath settles down for sleep, you cozy up inside your comfy sheets. You realize that the blanket providing you warmth, your favorite toys, your wonderful storybooks, and all the objects around you–they’ve all traveled long distances in many shapes and forms, landing right here beside you.
This feeling of the world being connected fills you with peace, knowing you are never alone, and that you are one of the many important pieces that brings our world together, much like the glass bottle that began as many grains of sand. How will your hands bring joy and comfort to the world?
Take this thought with you, as you begin to drift off to sleep.
