Can You Tame a Wild Animal?

In this episode of Mello, we explore what wild animals—from horses to jaguars—can teach us about calming our own minds. With imagination, breath, and kindness, even the most untamed thoughts can become gentle companions.

  • What do a galloping horse, a sleepy koala, and a fierce jaguar have in common with your thoughts? In this episode of Mello, we explore the wild world of animals—and how they can teach us to understand and gently guide our own busy minds. Inspired by Seb’s question, we look at the patience it takes to tame even the most untamed creatures—and how that same patience, trust, and kindness can help us settle our racing thoughts or unmotivated moods.

    Pacifying Your Mind

Hey, welcome to Mello! How are you today? I am really well thank you so much for asking! I am really excited about this week's episode. I know I know I say that every week but I really love what we do here at Mello!

This week, our question comes from Seb:

    Seb:  “XXX”

Did you know that wild horses can recognize human emotions just by reading our facial expressions? They can tell if you’re angry, happy, or calm—without a single word.

Pretty wild, right? Turns out, even the most untamed animals are paying close attention to how we feel.

I am wildly curious so sit back, relax…and mello

Let’s start by getting our wiggles out. Go ahead and wiggle.

That’s right–your toes and arms, your fingers and legs. Wiggle them up and down and all around. Now settle those wiggles into a comfortable spot. You are safe as you straighten your back and close your eyes, ready for our adventure.

With your last deep breath, your imagination is now ready for our adventure.

    (Intro)

In the jungles of the Amazon, the frozen tundras of the Arctic, deep underground, and beneath the scorching sun, wild creatures roam free. They live by their instincts, guided by nothing but survival and the frantic world around them.

Maybe it’s a swift gazelle, a sleepy sloth, or a fierce alligator. (Snap!) For most of Earth’s history, wild animals have roamed free. But is it possible to tame one? Could you turn a wild animal into a companion?

Let’s start with an animal we all know: the horse.

(Sounds of wild horses galloping) Wild horses don’t just live in stables—they roam vast open fields. If you tried to jump on a wild horse’s back, you wouldn’t stay on long!

    (Horse bucks!)

So, how do people tame them?

Horse trainers start by tying the horse to a post in a wide meadow, allowing it to roam within a safe distance. Day after day, they gently shorten the rope, giving the horse food, care, and kindness. Over time, the horse begins to trust the trainer. Eventually, it no longer needs the rope—it chooses to stay.

Now, what about something more exotic, like a koala? Koalas don’t need much convincing to be tamed. They love food, but they can also be a little lazy! To encourage a koala to move or engage, trainers often use small treats as rewards—just enough motivation to get them to take action. With the right balance of patience and reward, even the sleepiest koala can be nudged into movement.

But what about a truly wild animal—like a jaguar?

    (Jaguar rawr!)

Now, that’s a different challenge. Jaguars are natural hunters, built for speed and strength. To earn a jaguar’s trust, you’d have to prove that you’re neither predator nor prey. You’d have to be calm, strong, and consistent. Over time, with patience and respect, even the fiercest creatures can form bonds.

So, what can all of this teach us about taming something even more unpredictable—our own minds? Because let’s be honest, sometimes our minds feel like wild animals, don’t they?

    Take a few deep breaths.
What animal does your mind  feel like today? There’s no wrong answer—just notice. Your breath can help you understand how you're feeling. Let it guide you gently, one inhale at a time. Let’s take a few deep breaths together.

Is it wild and fast, like a galloping horse?

Slow and heavy, like a bear just waking from hibernation?

Or maybe soft and still, like a curled-up cat in the sun?

    Breathe in and out….

    In and out….

Well done, how does your body feel now?

    (wee pause)

Sometimes, our thoughts race like a wild horse, refusing to slow down. We try to calm down, but our minds buck us right off! In those moments, we can take inspiration from the horse trainer: set gentle boundaries, take small steps, and be patient with ourselves. With time, we learn that we don’t need to fight our thoughts—we can trust them to guide us.

Other times, our minds feel like a koala—lazy, unmotivated, content to do absolutely nothing. When that happens, we can give ourselves small rewards—tiny treats for completing tasks, like finishing a book chapter or taking a short walk. Just like the koala, we sometimes need a little extra encouragement to keep going.

And sometimes, our minds feel like jaguars—fierce, intense, maybe even a little scary. In those moments, we must be strong but kind. We take deep breaths, stand firm, and remind ourselves: We are in control. We don’t have to fight our feelings, but we also don’t have to let them control us.

The key to taming a wild animal—or a wild mind—is trust, patience, and kindness. With time, even the most restless thoughts can learn to be still. Even the fiercest emotions can be softened with care.

So today, take a deep breath. Whatever your mind feels like—a horse, a koala, a jaguar—you now have the tools to guide it. Be patient with yourself. Be kind. And just like the animals we’ve tamed today, with time, even your wildest thoughts can grow quiet, your unmotivated mind finds its drive, and your fiercest emotions can soften. You can find your own rhythm—right where you're meant to be.

But don’t think about losing your wild side!

But that doesn't mean you have to lose your wild side!

(RAWR - Sound of calming nature noises)
